DESIGN BRIEF:
We found this home as an abandoned renovation, left weathered and unfinished. The half completed architecturally designed extension was waiting to be brought to life.
Our client and developer’s brief was clear: the existing layout needed to be reworked to support innovation, longevity and the demands of a busy modern family. They wanted a strong sense of arrival and a considered level of architectural wow across both the finishes and design, aligned with the expectations of the new target market. This included the integration of premium appliances, fixtures and fittings throughout.
OUTCOME:
The resolved design carefully reworked the existing architecture without undermining its original intent, enhancing the home’s liveability while bringing it back into service as a luxurious and highly functional family home rather than starting again.
To resolve the challenges of entertaining and storage, we introduced a walk-through scullery, moving preparation, appliances and everyday mess away from the main kitchen. To create the sense of grand arrival the space was lacking, the opening between the original home and new extension was widened, transforming the way the kitchen and dining spaces are revealed on approach. A new window was also introduced to draw additional natural light into the room.
The basement was transformed into a dramatic underground cellar, becoming a defining feature of the home.
The design draws on timeless forms rather than fleeting trends, with a consistent colour palette creating cohesion throughout. Dark architectural details introduce a refined contemporary edge, balanced with natural textures and tactile finishes.
The kitchen island, finished in Austral Dream Dolomite stone with a custom rough edge, provides both presence and texture. Its curved form is echoed in the bulkheads and polished plaster rangehood, creating a considered visual language that carries throughout the space rather than relying on a single statement detail.
Dark timber cabinetry provides the drama called for in the brief, grounding the lighter stone selections, while timber chevron flooring through the main living areas adds warmth and a distinctive aesthetic character.
Continuing the material palette below, the underground cellar features textured limestone-plastered walls, dark timber-clad ceilings and bespoke lighting designed to highlight the room’s key architectural and material features.
The result is a sophisticated Subiaco home that balances architectural integrity with contemporary luxury, functionality and enduring appeal.
